Maybe You Don’t Need More Marketing Advice

A Founder’s Perspective: Coaching vs Agency

By Dav Lippasaar | Founder of SAAR® Media

I’ve met a lot of business owners who know far more about marketing than they give themselves credit for.

They know they should be testing different ads.

They know their website could convert better.

They know they should be following up with leads more consistently.

They know they need to look at the numbers more often.

They know their content has become inconsistent.

Ask them what needs improving, and most can give you a fairly good answer.

And yet…

Nothing really changes.

Not because they don’t care.

Not because they haven’t learned enough.

And not because the advice they’ve received is necessarily wrong.

They just haven’t been able to keep doing it all.

That distinction matters.

Because when marketing isn’t producing the results you want, the natural assumption is that you need to learn more.

So you look for another course.

Another workshop.

Another consultant.

Another person to tell you what you’re missing.

Sometimes, that is exactly what you need.

But sometimes, you already know enough.

The problem is that no one is consistently doing the work.

I’ve seen this happen more times than I can count.

A business goes through a program and comes out feeling motivated.

There’s a plan.

There are new ideas.

Campaigns get set up.

For a while, everything feels like it’s moving.

Then normal business life takes over again.

A staff issue comes up.

A client needs attention.

Operations get busy.

Sales need chasing.

The marketing tasks that were meant to happen this week have been moved to next week.

Then the week after that.

The campaigns are still running, so nothing feels completely broken.

But the testing slows down.

The reporting gets checked less often.

The creative that was working starts getting tired.

A tracking issue sits there longer than it should.

A landing page that could be improved stays exactly as it is.

Nothing collapses overnight.

It just slowly loses momentum.

And this is where I think many conversations about marketing support miss the point.

We spend so much time talking about knowledge.

What do you know?

What don’t you know?

What should you learn next?

But marketing results don’t come from knowing something once.

They come from someone doing something with that knowledge again and again.

A campaign needs to be tested.

Then measured.

Then adjusted.

Then tested again.

A piece of creative works until it doesn’t.

An audience performs until it changes.

A landing page can always be improved.

Tracking needs to be checked.

Follow-up needs to happen.

The work keeps moving.

That’s why I think there is a big difference between learning marketing and managing marketing.

Learning gives you understanding.

Managing means someone owns what happens next.

And that ownership is where many businesses get stuck.

I’ve spoken to business owners who have completed courses, worked with coaches and attended workshops.

They aren’t short on ideas.

If anything, they have too many.

They’ve got notes everywhere.

Saved videos.

Templates.

Frameworks.

Lists of things they want to change.

The issue isn’t finding another thing to do.

It’s having the time and capacity to do what already matters consistently.

I think this is also why some business owners become frustrated with themselves.

They assume:

“I know what I should be doing. Why am I not doing it?”

But running a business and consistently managing marketing are two different responsibilities.

Knowing that you should test new ad creative doesn’t create the hours needed to plan it, make it, launch it and assess the results.

Knowing that your website needs work doesn’t mean you have time to improve it.

Knowing that follow-up matters doesn’t make the follow-up happen.

At some point, the issue stops being a matter of knowledge.

It becomes capacity.

I sometimes think of it as the space between knowing and doing.

You can know exactly what should happen on one side.

But unless someone owns getting it done, there can still be a very big gap between that knowledge and the result you want on the other side.

And buying more knowledge doesn’t necessarily close it.

That’s not an argument against coaching.

Good coaching can be incredibly valuable.

If you genuinely don’t know what to do, having someone help you understand marketing, make better decisions and avoid expensive mistakes can save you a lot of time.

If you want to build the skill yourself and have the capacity to put what you learn into practice, coaching may be exactly the right fit.

Businesses need to be honest about the problem they’re trying to solve.

Do you genuinely not know what to do?

Or do you broadly know what needs to happen, but struggle to make it happen consistently?

Those are very different problems.

And they need different types of support.

One needs education.

The other needs execution.

Sometimes you need both.

I’ve seen businesses keep buying the first one when what they really needed was the second.

They finish one program, get busy again, lose momentum, then assume they need another program.

More information comes in.

More things are added to the list.

But the capacity to actually do the work hasn’t changed.

So the result doesn’t change much either.

That’s the question worth asking before buying another course, joining another program, or bringing in another consultant.

What is actually missing?

Knowledge?

Or someone to consistently make things happen?

Because there is a point where another good idea is just another thing sitting on your list.

And perhaps the answer isn’t learning more.

Perhaps it’s finally getting the things you already know matter done properly.

I’ve written a more structured article about this, including when marketing coaching works, where the gap between knowledge and execution begins to appear, and how to determine what kind of support your business actually needs.

Does Marketing Coaching Actually Work?

But if any of this feels familiar, start with one simple question:

If someone gave me the perfect marketing plan tomorrow, would I actually have the time and resources to execute it properly every week?

I think the answer tells you a lot.

If that’s where you’re at, I’m always happy to have a conversation.

No pressure. No pitch.

Just an honest look at what’s happening and what could actually help you move forward.

If you’d rather go through it together, you can book a time that works for you.
